Style a While: Dress Code While in Ecuador

According to Olga, who has lived in Guayaquil, it's always better to overdress. That means statement necklaces, makeup and ready to impress, and no comfy shoes, evah.
Of course, Ecuador is made up of many different cultures, and Guayaquil is different from Quito. However, in general, it seems that this holds true: being well-dressed is a must for travelers who want to respect Ecuadorian culture.
If you're attending business/ formal events:
1) bring a dark suit. Always appropriate, even in the heat of the summer.
2) Men: wear trousers and ties. Only managers and executives need full suits.
3) Women: blouses, stockings, and high-heeled shoes. Cut should be conservative and not low-cut or too tight. Form-fitting skirts are good, but are generally just above the knee and not too short.
4) Women: for meals or visiting someone else's home, a light dress, skirt, cocktail dresses, or pants are appropriate.
For casual, around-the-town goings:
1) Conservative is key. Nice pants, jeans, and comfortable blouses or shirts are appropriate, and ones that cover arms and legs in the Andes (where Quito is located) is preferred.
2) For the beach, conservative swimsuits and flipflops and shorts are fine.
In general, avoid wearing things like running shoes, active-wear, or hiking boots for outings. Save those for weekend workouts or hikes. They're also ok for sporting events. More information can be found here.
